bby’s first rave was in brooklyn one night. i have no idea where… i had been to day parties before this night, but i never really counted them as parties. they weren’t in the expected dark industrial settings or venues with lights and lasers. there wasn’t anything romantic about looking at your friends in daylight, bouncing around like goons. i didn’t get it until i finally got there.

i thought this one was going to be stressful. my on-again, off-again first girlfriend wanted to stab me that day (not literally, but probably literally).  i guess we were off at the time, and we had planned to go together with our friends, but since she was all pissy with me, i just went with my bff javie’s boyfriend paul and my homegirl jersey becca (not to be confused with bronx becca). when we got there, there was a wait (hence the photo above, where i am looking angelic at the bottom). i think we were standing there freezing our asses off for like an hour. at one point, FOX news shows up interviewing people about RAVE CULTURE and i’m ducking trying to hide in case my mom is watching the news, lmao. i was old enough to be out, i think i was 18 at the time… but she was so dead against raves for some reason. drugs?

i just watched that “street gang: how we got to sesame street” movie and cried my eyeballs out.  partly for nostalgia, but all the people who died</3  it’s heartbreaking.

on a serious note – what a revolutionary show.  for kids, for adults, for learning, for laughs and so much sticks with you.  it’s crazy that even today, i can reference stuff from sesame street into my daily life, too.

i love that i’m 40 and i still absolutely melt whenever i see grover.  he’s so stinking cute and STILL hilarious bc it’s all written by adults.  the talent was amazing, what a time they started it, what an amazing cast and staff, etc.

anyways, while i was watching this movie, one of my idiotic thoughts was about a time i referenced sesame street IRL as an adult.

picture it: maspeth, queens…  winter, some time between the years 2000-2002, nighttime.  raver tiff and i decide to go roll on e at dave and beaker’s house one night.  only dave was home at the time, and once that guy started spinning records, he was in his own little world.

tiff and i were in the backyard, sitting on the front steps of the guest house type structure they lived in talking, laughing, rolling.  we were sitting near beaker’s bedroom window and we were tripping so hard we thought these specific looking sticks near his window were chicken feet?  we convinced ourselves he was sacrificing chickens.  for what?  who knows?  it was ridiculous.

unless you live under a rock, you’ve heard about the two ppl that died at electric zoo last weekend, and i’m EYE-ROLLING sick of reading about it.  wait, that may seem horribly disrespectful because they died, BUT i’m talking about the press and their total ignorance about what happened (not the people that died – i think it’s awful that these people died).

anyways, NOT THAT I’M SAYING DRUG USE IS SAFE and/or OKAY for YOU (additionally, i’ve never taken molly, but i have indeedy taken ecstasy many times over the years since i was around 17/18), but my point is that when i was going to raves back in the day, we used dancesafe.org. do the next generation of “EDM” (cringe! @ that term) kids not know about this website?

that website kept us naughty little ravers up to date (with pictures, descriptions, dates, etc.) on batches of pills that were currently circulating at the time, so that we could have a heads up about if there were bad batches going around.  WHICH YES, DID HAPPEN.  i understand that while between checking listed drugs and/or venturing into our own testing kits, that we’re not chemists, and maybe we couldn’t be 100% certain – or maybe even 65% certain – but it was step above going in unaware.

i also had ONE person that i would get my pills from, for years.  they were always safe…
i never popped random pills from strangers at parties.

i don’t know anything about club culture, i never really went to clubs when i was a raver. i went to parties (raves), at venues and warehouses, sometimes they would be at clubs, but it’s not like i was going to anything like pacha every week with the guidos.  i don’t know if they were educated about that site or how they handled their recreational drug use, but i do not know ONE SOUL that died from a drug OD.  my friends candy-flipped, my friends did K and acid, my friends did E and smoked weed…  my friends NEVER did drugs AND drank.  in fact, i can’t remember ONE rave (aside from the ones that i’ve gone to in the last two years), that even served alcohol (which is usually the horrible combo that leads to ER visits, cough).  my friends also weren’t doing those types of drugs combined with prescription pills…  i only know 1 or 2 girls that sometimes took xanax, but they weren’t even doing them at raves, they were doing them on off-nights.

i don’t know what happened to they guy, but it’s been reported that this girl took 6 hits of molly.  SIX HITS.
a) wtf? who does that?!
b) it was like a billion degrees out to begin with, but considering the humidity factor, EW.
and c) she was SURROUNDED by a sea of people.

when i was rolling, the last thing i would EVER want to be was in a crowd of people like that – nor should anyone ever be in extreme heat while on these types of drugs.  your body temperature should stay cool.  for me, being uncomfortable or being overheated would spark anxiety.  once you start feeling like that, and your mind starts going into dark places, the bad trip bug was coming to bite your ass.  AND lastly, has any press even mentioned “water intoxication”?  yes, you can DIE FROM DRINKING TOO MUCH WATER while on ecstasy (i don’t know if it’s the same for molly, but it’s something to keep in mind).

In this report, almost 8 in 10 Ecstasy-related visits to the ED involved Ecstasy in combination with alcohol or other drugs, suggesting that Ecstasy users need to be educated about the dangers of not only Ecstasy but also these drug combinations.”
