…have i ever been to a show in queens that wasn’t a local band?
: scratches head :
does black 47 on irish night at shea stadium count? oh wait, i saw the sleeping one year at flushing meadow park, but i can’t find anything via google that ever happened. i think it was some type of free vans show? i dunno. the internet tells me it never occurred, so i have no information.
WELL… i got to see rancid this weekend, and it was so nice to feel normal for a night. it was the first show i’ve been to since the pandemic happened, but it felt more like 4 damn years.
not gonna lie, singing and dancing at the same time was hard to do, lol. i was winded first song that i really started dancing (erm, in a punk pit for you non-punk show goers, it’s called skanking… if you’d like a visual, this is hysterical, and not a terrible representation at all). it’s confusing that i felt so damn out of shape and out of breath, bc i’ve been either cycling or doing aerobics on a daily basis for the last few months, with cycling being more regular for even longer… maybe it was just that when i do aerobics, i don’t use those mosh pit muscles. either way, once i started getting into it, my body just kind of kept up a little better.
the show was at forest hills stadium, which i never even knew existed. i have no idea how i didn’t know it existed, seeing as that i grew up in queens, lived in ridgewood, glendale and rego park. i’ve even walked over there a billion times and there is a freaking sign that reads “forest hills stadium” on one of the bridges in the little apartment complex/square i’m in love with, by the LIRR stop off of austin st… smh.
i’m guessing no one i really wanted to see ever played there. it was a really cool spot though, and i wish more bands would play it. when you first walk onto the property, there’s a bunch of different booths for local restaurants, lots of different things to drink, etc. and you’re on this big astroturf lawn right outside of the stadium itself. everyone was all spread out and it was nice to not be on top of each other like when you’re at a bar at a venue, in the lobby/merch areas or the floor of the venue.
as big as the area was, people we knew kept popping up out of the woodwork. i’m sure so many people were just itching to come out, too. i went to the show with kristen and missy and we ran into so many people there, from so many different eras of life. old friends, current friends, awkward people, old flames, jeff, marilyn, andrew, frank and buzz, kristen’s MIA friend brendan, a bunch of old buddies i met through greek steve… it was weird/nice to see those folks.
anyways, i didn’t care for the dropkick murphy’s setlist that i sneak peeked from setlist.fm, and missy and kristen didn’t really give a shit about them, so we skipped them. i think we’ve all seen them live, so it’s not like we missed out on them in our lifetimes entirely.
rancid was awesome as usual. i really wanted to see “red hot moon” but they didn’t play it. they also didn’t play “hooligans” or “nihilism” which would have made me very happy, le sigh. hopefully they won’t take another 4 or 5 damn years to come back.
i’m also glad i didn’t break my damn neck on a crushed can doing any dancing or circle pitting on the tennis floor surface. it seemed more grippy than i had anticipated, and it even took a few kicks to get any crushed cans out of the way that i was trying to move so that i, nor anyone else slipped and humiliated themselves. i already feel like the old weirdo at the show, lol.
i asked my mom if she’d ever been to FHS and her snarky little answer was “OF COURSE! i saw the cars and wang chung there, it was awesome!” and then she mentioned someone else i had no idea about… my heart yearned to see the cars, life is so unfair.

ERMAGERD… this news cheered me up immensely!
i feel like maybe some people wouldn’t pin me for a fan of this song, but it’s one of my faves. in fact, i’ve been building a list of my top 100 faves throughout my entire life since last year, and this will definitely be on it. it’s a sentimental one for me. when TRL first came about, i used to go over to my twin friends’ house and we would watch the whole countdown, and it was about the same time when this came out. this was on there for what seems like forever. just brings me right back to my senior year.
it was a bittersweet lil era… a tough time. i had just broken up with randolph, i was spending more time with new/old friends because i was kind of fighting with sophie, my friends just started going to raves which was changing our dynamic (before i started going), so it was kind of synced up to a transitional time, i suppose. it’s also just a good fuckin 90s pop song.
i mean, if this year fucking deserves to come in with a biden bang, this is def a way to do it. i’m glad gregg and co. aggreed to it… this makes my 2021 hear very happy already, just with them playing the inauguration.

i can’t stop watching this video.
i watch it once a day and it makes me tear up every time. he is so stinking cute, i can’t even stand it and the song goes perfectly with the visuals. thanks to whomever made it.
if you haven’t already watched the mandalorian, DO IT.
prepare yourself for anxiety, anger, sadness and happiness.

did you know the wu-tang logo was designed by a queens native? i sure didn’t.
it took me 26 years to find this out, but here we are, and at least i got here.

so… i FINALLY got a new job! it only took an entire damn year, but it was definitely worth the wait. i gained $13k more than my last job in this new spot. i’m only on day two, but so far it’s been pretty good. i’m already working on a small part of one of the largest sites at my job, so i’m getting nerves out of the way.
i am unfortunately stuck using a mac, and my desk setup is a bit janky bc they gave me a GINORMOUS monitor that is basically a tv and now i’m relying on the laptop and i’m going blind. i am not used to that XL monitor life, and i don’t know how you mac people do it. it’s also on a swivel, not on the desk itself so it’s hard to move/position it. the keyboard shortcuts are awful and the mouse they gave me is so dumb. you can left and right click, but it’s all one button – it’s so awkward, but i digress.
day one didn’t start off so bad, in fact, it started straight up interesting.
i wanted to see how long the walk was from penn up to the 50s where my office is, and the train schedule would either left me at penn with 30 mins to spare or 60. i went with the full hour window, since it was my first day. i strolled up slowly and i ended up getting to my building about 30 mins early so that i could grab breakfast and a coffee and chill out. i didn’t want to be irritable NYC commuter jess on my first day.
* * *
i ended up getting to my building with about 20 mins to spare, so i got my croissant and my espresso and sat down at one of the free tables. within about one minute, some lady sits down next to me and i look up, and there’s beto o’rourke. he was approached by two people, and started chatting and taking selfies with them. of course, like most people in 2019, i pull out my phone and take a picture of him. i look at the lady that sat down next to me, and i was mouthed “oh my gosh” and pointed at him, and she was like “oh, that’s my husband”.
there weren’t too many people in this starbucks, so he actually got to walk away from the two without being bombarded. as soon as he got to the table, i said hi and told him i was a huge fan of sparta. he lit up and started shooting the shit with me right away. i’m hoping it was refreshing for someone to approach him with something other than politics while he was on the move in the real world.
i honestly didn’t know who he really was before the lead singer (jim) was raving at him at the show kristen and i went to last year. i told him that jim talked him up and that i had donated to him. we shot the shit about where i lived, where he lived in NYC, what i do for work, we talked about my new job that features audio books, and how he had done an audio book about punk rock and that he covered the fugazi chapter. i also had mentioned that i share a birthday with jim, and once i told him that, he thought it was too rad. he asked his wife to take a picture of us to send to him, along with the story of the morning. it was a really funny run-in.
🙁 of course i didn’t even think to ask for a picture, since the situation seemed so damn normal… so he’s got a picture of us floating around in the cloud somewhere, and i was left with this nifty story.
it’s a cool “first day” story, so i shouldn’t really complain.
i asked him what he was doing in NYC, leisure or biz, and he said he was going on oprah. i looked online just now and apparently he’s not ruling out running for president in 2020. before i had left the table, i didn’t want to be *that girl*, so i didn’t mentioned presidency at all, specifically. i did however tell him that he’s doing great things, i admire what he stands for and sort of alluded that he should go for “it” (wink wink).
BETO FOR PREZ!

picture it. flushing, queens, 1997…
a confused, young girl in love is finally being exposed to her musical preferences that will set the tone for the rest of her life. a sexy brown boy, skateboard readily in hand, ball chain around neck with airwalks on is showing her what actual punk rock is. he shows her ska-punk as well, and she embraces it with open arms.
NO… punk rock is not green day (i still have a hard time calling green day punk, no matter if all of us 70s/80s babies came through that rite of passage or not), and 15 year old me is confused.
“BUT THEY HAVE BLUE AND GREEN HAIR…?” – her brain says
(still at that point, only actual rocker people had weird colour hair)
…he paves the way.
bands like rancid, goldfinger, bloodhound gang, no doubt, etc., but getting to the point here… NOFX.
the moment i heard “i heard they suck live!!”, i was hooked. the only exposure i had to punk that i can remember growing up was the ramones and green day (again, i thought it was straight up punk). while the ramones were definitely more punk than GD, this was different. this was faster, grosser and more vulgar. also: there were horns?!
i heard this live album before i heard the actual albums these songs came off of, and still to this day, the album versions don’t sound correct to me. this album is offensive as shit, but i always found it funny (ie: together in the sand, they talk about fucking your mother and then called her a hoe – i now know that slut shaming is wrong)
anyways, this album is going to be 25 next year (EW! plz kill me, i’m old), and i was thinking to myself about how fucking rad it would be if fat mike and the guys would do a 25 year anniversary show for it. i would be there in a heartbeat, with my beavis and butthead remote in hand (YES, I STILL HAVE MINE, AND YOU WILL ONLY UNDERSTAND IF YOU KNOW THIS ALBUM LIKE THE BACK OF YOUR HAND).
i made these absolutely ridiculous earrings yesterday (yep, from my actual 90s CD insert), which inspired me to listen to it while i straightened my glorious mane last night. in addition, it inspired me to post this. so, if fat mike + co., if you find this before 2020, please do this.
picture it. times square, 2016…
jessica and two co-workers are on their way to see the gin blossoms live at bb kings (I KNOOOWWWW…. how un-punk of us, lol). we are in search of sustenance, when a co-worker suggests a restaurant that is too packed to even bother. as soon as we step out, a man with a red mohawk steps in front of us. male co-worker and i look at each other at the same time, trying to hold in our energy and excitement. female co-worker is like “WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU 2?”. we walk behind the mohawked man for half a block and i’m like “do we say hi?”, and he’s like “um, yes”, but does nothing, so i go for it. i flag him down and ask for a picture. mind you, aside from my hair, we do NOT look like a pair of punks. we had just come from work, so he’s probably like “why do these people want a pic with me?”. i wound up saying “hey mike!”, so i guess he put two and two together and obliges the pic and then chats us up with some small talk. i’m star struck because i always am, and my adrenaline filled ass actually asks him where he’s off to.
at any rate, i got this out of the ordeal:

I FINALLY SAW SPARTAAAAAAAAAAA!!!1
i’m so glad i finally got to cross them off of my bucket list. if you don’t know who they are (as i did not, until around 2011), apparently these dudes (or some of these dudes over time) were in a band called “at the drive-in”. i didn’t really research too much bc i don’t care, honestly. as soon as i saw that the lead singer was the dude from the mars volta, i was all “YUP that explains why i never bothered”. i haaaaaaaate that dude’s voice. so where a door closes, a window opens – and i love hearing jim ward’s voice spilling out of it. much bettah!
♥ ♥ ♥
picture it… salt lake city, 2011:
an attractive peasant girl is falling asleep while getting a time consuming tattoo done (weirdo). relaxing music was playing in the tattoo parlor… she comes to find out after being woken up by her tattoo artist (lol), that the soothing, melodic music was a band called “sparta”, and an album titled “porcelain”. she instantly fell in love and never looked back.
♥ ♥ ♥
unfortunately for me, i came across sparta during their own nap. they had taken a hiatus 3 years prior to that day, so i had to wait all of these years for them to wake up and play. it was worth the wait… i am so glad to see them in such a small venue (bowery ballroom). they also played my favorite song, which made my cold, tiny heart swell.
actual footage of me at the show:
jim also asked all of us to, if possible, to donate to his friend running for senate. i’m assuming you being here are probably like-minded to me (COUGHCOUGHFUCKTRUMP AND COUGHCOUGHFUCKREPBLICANS AND COUGHCOUGHFUCKCONSERVATIVES), so i figured it’d be a good idea to post it here. we need more progressive minds running the show, so show your support if you can.

this is such a summer album. this came out the summer of my senior year of high school… takes me right back.
please note: (v important)
i have always skipped “adam’s song” and “all the small things”.
i hate them so much… i wish they would just go die in a corner.

i love face to face so fucking much, and this song has been stuck in my head since saturday, as it played twice in kristen’s car on the way to the beach.
they’re playing on my birthday this year, but they’re doing an acoustic set. i am so bummed about it. 😐 i just want a good pit to dance around in for my bday. these vans can’t skank forever, i’m getting older, lol.
FACE TO FACE, COME BACK TO NYC!!!1

sooooooooooo since last i posted about deodorant (click here if you missed it), i kind of stopped using deodorant.
that’s right… i said i stopped using deodorant.
like, even through hot ass fucking days of shitty, humid NYC weather.
update 06/19: even through 2 sweltering beach days!
tea tree oil, my friends. i was sick of giving money to companies for natural deodorants that seemed to keep failing me, so i decided to get to the root of why body odor happens. i came across a lot of articles talking about how tea tree oil kills the bacteria that causes body odor, so i went out and bought a small bottle of it. i dab/spread it on underneath an additional essential oil for fragrance purposes (TTO stinks). i don’t smell like a complete hippie once it all dries, and i magically do not stink. i sweat (not profusely – over-sweating was never my problem), but i do NOT stink. it’s nuts.
i suggest testing your skin to see if TTO bothers you, but it doesn’t bother me at all. i googled about this and a lot of people combine it with other stuff like coconut oil (bc omg the entire internet uses coconut oil for everything) or baking soda (which i’m EXTREMELY sensitive to), but i just use it directly.
you’re welcome. ♥

I’M NOT CRYING, YOU’RE CRYING!!!1
i have to be honest – i never really pay attention to the R&R HoF inductions, but of course i cared this year bc the cars were finally inducted! i can’t believe it took so long for them to get there.
watching this induction was wonderfully overwhelming, as the cars are one of my faaaaaaaaaaavorite bands ever. brandon flowers got to do it, and his love for the cars was pouring out of him while speaking… it was great. i can’t believe it took him that long to get to know who they were. brandon and i were born in the same year, just three months apart. it’s kind of funny how that happened. he discovered the cars while i was discovering all of the alt bands of the 90s, including weezer (funny enough someone in =w= played WITH the cars during the ceremony)…
i got lucky and i had young/rad people around me in the 80s the shoved all of that current music at the time in my face at a young age. my mother was a huge cars fan, and my cousins mary and jimmy were teenagers at that time and used to let me watch the heartbeat city VHS tape with them. i vividly remember being SO confused bc of ric walking on water during “magic” and i thought it was magic. i remember thinking about how cool/naughty the video for “hello again” was, and i love that i was a warhol fan before i didn’t even know who warhol was. panorama is probably not one of the cars most popular songs, but it’s one of my favorites, and the video was always one of my favorites.
i am so happy for them. during their speeches, they thanked us fans. it made me wonder if they even know how many “young” fans they know they actually have. i read in an article a few years back that ric ocasek didn’t want to tour for many reasons, but one of them was that he thought a younger audience wouldn’t exist. i got inspired to write him a hand-written letter soon after i read that, BEGGING him to tour for us one last time… i have no idea if he ever got the letter, and i highly doubt it’ll ever happen. if it ever did, it would definitely help fill my cold, black heart and make my measly little life a little more complete. music is one of the only things that really makes me feel emotion in life, and it’s a big part of my social life. when my favorite bands won’t tour anymore, life = over.
April 24th, 2018 @ 7:02 pm
since it’s been three fucking years since i was able to utilize my own site without feeling disgusting (non-armpit/sweat/stinky related issue), lemme just update you on what’s been going on in:
*THE WORLD OF MY ARRRRRRRRMPITS*
i was on a quest a few years ago to gtfoff of aluminum deodorants and was on the hunt for the best possible natural deodorant (read those posts here, if you’d like).
okay, where the hell did we leave off here? :clicks pen nervously:
lemme review these jammies for ya:

i am so fucking excited.

i must admit, this is probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite no doubt song EVER (probably my favorite NxD album, tbh). i hate what the song is about, but the music<333 best.

here’s another picture that i took in south pasadena the other day. this is the opening scene in haddonfield, from halloween 1. i could have done better, but this is what i did from memory (not awful). it’s actually really hard to see the house in the top picture in real life, because it’s now covered by trees. i sat on the corner for a hot minute trying to make sure i was even hitting the correct angle. a lot of the houses look the same. also: it has been 37 years since the movie was filmed, so the trees have flourished, lol.
at the other locations (ie: the street with the “hey jerk, speed kills”), the trees are actually still standing in the same shape. the same ivy is covering the trees as well.
October 14th, 2015 @ 1:31 pm
steven and i went to anaheim for the duck’s home opener this monday, and also went back to visit the hedge! 🙂 ’tis the season!
i also never got to see the location of the walk the girls took home from haddonfield high, back to their houses… so i ended up on that block as well (the “speed kills” scene‘s street). none of the locations were decorated for halloween yet, which was a bummer… but when i arrived back at the strode house, there was a real pumpkin there this time! i really want to get to the damn hospital from 2 (which apparently doesn’t even look like it anymore, and is on private VA hospital property)… grr!
September 29th, 2015 @ 4:51 pm
almost 20 years later, and still one of my favorites… ever. ♥

hockey, falling leaves, warm lattes, horror movie marathons, long strolls, SWEATER WEATHER, pumpkins, acorns, halloween lights, rides upstate, crunchy leaves, scarves & gloves, winter hats, hockey jerseys, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh! 🙂

September 23rd, 2015 @ 12:42 pm
i’m the self-proclaimed birthday grinch… i could give two shits that it’s my birthday. i don’t really try to make plans unless it’s a milestone, i don’t want any cake, i don’t do that thirsty shit where i post about it online… i’d rather avoid it altogether. i hate getting older.
i will ALWAYS make plans to go to shows around my birthday, and this year was a doozy! the adicts came around again and played on thursday, and rancid played on friday.
the adicts played after bands i had no interest in seeing (psycho/rockabilly bullshit). they didn’t go on until 11PM – which didn’t agree with me and sceave’s old people bodies (lol). i was also fighting some sort of sinus/cold thing for 2 days, so i was so fucking tired by the time we were done with the show.
rancid on the other hand, i knew i’d need to be 100% for. every time we see them, it’s a mosh fit fucking workout…
i went to h2o/rancid with an old friend (pun intended), and danced my ass off so hard that i couldn’t function muscle wise for 4 days… i’m also covered in tons of small, random bruises. i actually ended up also seeing the great houdini at the show, and ended up dancing with/alongside him most of the night. i love bumping into people at these shows that i usually don’t get to see… when rancid took the stage, i ran right into the crowd so we weren’t stuck on the outside. i instantly found my friends john and joe right away… i ended up singing right into john’s face before i even realized it was him. we were both like wtf, lol? there was un pit shift and they were both gone. missy was also with me and she didn’t want to go in the circle. she stayed on the rim and i’d come back and forth, but i really just wanted to be in that circle dancing. it’s such a good workout. rancid always has the best crowds. almost no douches, fun pits, and everyone is also scream-singing their hearts out. i dread the day that i’m too old for shows/pits. 🙁 i live for those nights/vibes.
i keep having to go to shows at terminal 5, and it’s such a pain in the balls to get to. i really miss roseland 🙁 that’s where i’d seen rancid before that for years… now this is their new spot. it accommodates the large crowd that they bring in, so i guess they’re sticking with it.
September 15th, 2015 @ 3:54 pm
i’ve been toying with the idea of a new york rangers tattoo for quite some time now… i never know what to get, though. i definitely would want it integrated with autumn, whatever i decide on. i’ve toyed with the idea of autumn leaves in the shape of a laurel wreath, traditional style, liberty logo, something with MSG (outside or the ceiling), something with a “30” incorporated… i don’t want the shield because it’s got too much white in it, no one ever gets the blue correct, and i hate negative space in tattoos. what it always boils down to is the liberty logo or generally the statue of liberty (wearing a jersey?).
i started re-watching daria again last week, and at the end of every episode there are alter egos to the left of the running credits. lo and behold, jane as the statue of liberty popped up, and an idea was born (left). it might need some tweaking (and the addition of daria), but it’s a start.
and speaking of daria fandom, can we just talk about my SWEET photoshop skills circa 1997…
September 1st, 2015 @ 5:23 pm
a couple of weeks ago, steve and i were in washington and alaska… he was out there in seattle for work, and i joined him for the few days after he was finished. while we were out there, i wanted to check out some of the twin peaks filming locations. they weren’t too far away from seattle, just a bit east. where we visited was also in a large loop, so we hit the few spots and then went back on the highway to the city. here are the pics 🙂
the first stop was the (snoqualmie) falls and the great northern… there were a billion people up on the balcony, so i couldn’t get a shot without complete strangers in it 😐
i also didn’t get a shot in the hotel or anything, it seemed too busy and i felt weird, lol.
then we hit the twin peaks sheriff’s dept (which is now a private race track/school). the mill is across the way from there, and that’s where the drivers race their cars. when we pulled up, the groundskeeper already knew what we were doing there, and said we could go inside. there was a girl working the desk, but i didn’t say anything about being lucy, lol. she called us twin peakers and told us that we could look around, so we did – the wood on the walls was still in tact. super cool to see… also: i totally peed there. that’s mainly why i wanted to go in.
next up was the “welcome to twin peaks” sign (the painted one on the right is actually on the back wall of the cafe, FYI)
and last but not least, the double R diner (twede’s cafe in north bend, WA). steve got a stomach ache from eating there – and no, we didn’t have the cherry pie OR the coffee. also: the inside looks NOTHING like the show. apparently there was a fire there years ago. i can’t remember offhand if they actually shot the show there or not, though. maybe it was a set.
where laura was found was really far away from there, and a lot of other scenes were shot in california, not WA.
either way, i was ecstatic! 🙂

FFFUUUUU GOOGLE, I DID IT MYSELF!!!1
so two years ago, i posted about this seemingly lost WPIX indiana jones promo (please go read the post, so that i don’t have to write about it again, lol #lazyblogger). i was stumping google so hard, but i found a few people also inquiring about it… so i wrote to them about it as well. nothing ever turned up, so i emailed WPIX directly last november as a last resort.
it’s almost as if it didn’t exist… UNTIL TODAY.
i got an email in my inbox from one of their reps earlier that lead me straight to it!
sooooooooooo, if for some reason you too were looking for the WPIX “Raiders of the Lost Ark” movie promo… here ya go (a blurb from my email is even in there)!!!1
P.S. sorry i haven’t posted in like, 5 months… i post randomly @ jaejess.com, so check there if you’d like to read my thoughts, and i’m lacking here.
January 6th, 2015 @ 2:31 pm
i don’t know how or why it took me almost an entire year to post these pictures, but last march i went to california. i flew in with steve and our friend joe for a pens/ducks game, and then i ended up staying the rest of the week with bee. while i was out there, to carry on my forced tradition of finding filming locations with bee (lol), i had her bring me to a few special spots. los angeles is fucking huge, and really annoying to navigate, so i picked a few that were close in proximity. it was harder to achieve than when we were scouting filming spots in salt lake city.
i know it’s super nerdy, but i really want to get to see most of the halloween filming locations from 1, 2, 4, and 5. since i had covered a lot of 4/5 in utah, the california locations are up next. my sister and i always talked about doing this together, so i decided to wait for the milestone spots. those spots weren’t close to where bee lives (van nuys), nor was it super close to central los angeles anyway, so i didn’t go to any with bee.
HOWEVER. my sister ended up flying into LA the last night that i was there, so we setup a trip to the houses where annie and laurie were babysitting in halloween 1 when she landed…
while i was with bee, these were the other places i got to snap pics of.
1. zuma beach – baywatch was filmed here… maybe that little lifeguard station was in the show?
2. the old cobra kai dojo… apparently it was turned into a bank, but it was nothing when i got there.
3/4. the apartment complex that daniel lived in, in the karate kid.
5. the poltergeist house!
6. the liquor store from clueless where cher gets robbed after the party in the valley.
this time around in cali, steve said he’d be willing to go to pasadena with me – which means i could end up going to see the actual myers house, laurie’s house, the elrod’s house, THE HEDGE, the school where tommy went and possibly the hospital from 2 (but from a distance, since it’s a private VA hospital now, womp womp).
also in south pasadena, and very close to the halloween locations: THE MY SO CALLED LIFE HOUSE.
i WILLLLLLLLLLLL get that night shot. oh yes, i WILL.

OKAY so i was complaining earlier, but then my day got a little brighter… recently, i reconnected with one of my elementary school buddies via instagram. we were closest of friends in like 5/6th grade… funny enough, we both grew up to like punk rock (yet we’ve never run into each other at shows). anyways, she let me know this morning/afternoon that vans was giving out free bouncing souls/gorilla biscuits (RSVP) tickets a la house of vans. so WOO! free bouncing souls tickets, YESPLZ.
i gathered a few of my friends, including one of my coworkers – and i am HYYYPED. i got very spoiled for a few years when the souls were playing all the time, and i got used to seeing them (minimum) 4/5 times a year… i haven’t been to a smaller souls show in almost two summers. last summer they played with gaslight anthem on the piers, but it didn’t really feel like a souls show at all. nobody was dancing/paying attention, i dunno.
when RSVP/smaller types of shows come to mind, i instantly think about the souls show at cha cha’s down in coney.
anyways, that show was amazingly important for two rad reasons:
a) i was promised by the lead singer (greg) that he’d ride the cyclone with me for the first time, prior to the show (via myspace, maybe?).
b) the. show. was. fucking. amazing.
a) it was raining that day, so no one was riding any rides at all… AND when i had bumped into greg after the show, he was all “ah man, sorry we didn’t get to ride the cyclone today” (!!!) the fact that he actually remembered was awesomesauce. it goes to show that the souls give a shit about their fans.
b) the. show. was. too. fucking. amazing. – no souls show has ever lived up to the cha cha’s show.
cha cha’s was a damn shoebox (them small/intimate punk shows are the best ever). it was late august on a rainy night – hot as balls. they played songs i’ve never seen them play before (i wish i had a set list, DOH!)… EVERYONE was singing and dancing. the best vibes ever… there was an age requirement, which weeded out the little shits that don’t know how to act at shows… it was just perfecto.
below is a video of my exbf on stage singing… ah man, it was so, so good.
as time goes by, i feel like shows get less and less epic. i mean, of course they’re always fun… it’s just that i’ve been doing this for almost 20 years, my youth is fading and the awe and fascination at shows is reasonably nil. i’m turning into the cranky old show veteran that doesn’t like beer spilled on them by little idiots. luckily for me, that rarely happens at souls shows… that’s more at long island based BS.
i’ve never been to HOV, but i’m assuming it’s also outdoors (bleh), buttt i’m hoping since it “sold out” so quickly, it’ll be one of those obscure/weird souls shows.

^ look at the cool setup the rangers installed in herald square!!! 😀
i’m sooooooooo proud of these new york rangers! we’re 2 wins away from getting into the stanley cup finals. i can’t even begin to describe how exciting that is… we haven’t been there since the last time we won the cup.
i NEEEEEEEEED to see lundqvist raise that cup. i’ve been watching hockey again for the last 7/8 years, and every year i watch him work his magic all season for nothing. okay, well not for nothing – he breaks an insane amount of records and wins trophies and what not – BUT THE BIGGEST ONE… THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE – he deserves it, already.
the team this year – including hank, it wasn’t an easy start for them. it was shaky because we had just gotten rid of torts and inherited AV, the chemistry was off – there was a new system. i didn’t think we’d even make the playoffs at all, to be honest. the fact that we came back and dominated the penguins was insane.
okay, no one cares about sports around these parts but me… lol. just documenting my excitement for the blueshirts. WOOOOO!
