i am always the unpopular opinion when it comes time to working from home. i am so glad we had to do it all this time because i saved so much money not commuting, but at the same time, i’m sick of being in bayside. i’m sick of not having a routine outside of my house, i’m sick of not socializing with people other than the people at my house and my circle of friends. i miss talking to my co-workers face to face, i miss going through the take shelves at work (free books!), i miss having my massive second monitor at work, getting in my professional mental place. when i’m at home, i’m distracted by everything and definitely am more lax and unproductive… i hate that.
i think the only things i like about working from home are: pooping in peace (prob the only reason i’d say let’s WFH full time, i am not a public pooper), taking a 10 min shower whenever i feel like it, not listening to annoying co-workers convos, saving money on commuting and not dealing with getting home (going into the city, i usually just sleep on the express bus, so i don’t care about my morning commute).
i miss: art and people, taking pictures, street art, going to old favorite bars and finding new ones, eating delicious food, taking random strolls through streets i’ve been on a million times or never before… i love seeing the empire state building up close and personal. i love seeing one astor plaza and reminiscing about another lifetime i lived over 20 years ago. i want to have a common meeting place with friends again. i want to be able to take a 10 min train ride or a 20 min walk from work to the garden to watch a ranger game… as much as i hate how this city has turned out in the last 20+ years, i still love the scraps and bones that i do cherish, the things that still linger.
i know i can do all of that now, but i sure as shit am not going to talk a 15 min walk to bell blvd, hop on a train for $7 each way and randomly go to the city for just a few hours on a regular basis. the energy… the money… no. at least if i’m already at the office, i just STAY out for the evening.
i love being in the city.
manhattan… but we locals never call it that.
we just got the email today that our office is finally going back two days a week, starting next month. hopefully the weather will be nice to commemorate our return and hopefully the covid numbers will stay down.
