hey, kid

so if you’re not already aware, i’ve been trying to keep track of what i binge on streaming services since last year. this year, steven had to sign up for HBO max to watch the newest godzilla movie, so we had a month free and i took advantage. i watched all of game of thrones in like a month and a half (i’m a freak) and then threw in sex and the city when he forgot to cancel the free month.
i somehow didn’t retain any spoilers for either show (aside from one GoT spoiler, which i won’t reveal in case you didn’t watch it), which was nice… these are both HBO shows, and i didn’t have HBO when GoT was on, and sex and the city, well, i don’t have a good reason for not watching it. i figured maybe it was just too mature for me at the time (i was 16 going on 17), and i just mean mature like the problems didn’t apply to my life yet. my ex bf’s mom watched it religiously, which was kind of a turn off for me, and the other reason i have is absolutely stupid… the box set honestly annoyed tf out of me when i worked at the video store. it was bulky bc it was on VHS (yes, i am that old) and we constantly had to keep our eyes on it while it was on the counter so that it didn’t get stolen.
anyways, it’s kind of depressing while i was watching it NOW because i’m older than everyone on the show but samantha. i also actually recently realized i’m as old as al bundy was on married with children. like, how tf did that happen? ew.
what did i think about it?
(maybe some SLIGHT spoilers ahead?)
the show itself is pretty damn funny. i know there’s a lot of dramatic, emotional, love/women shit going on, but overall i could get through it. i did really end up disliking charlotte and miranda for a lot of the show. i can’t stand when women fly off the cuff and say/do dumb shit because of emotions, which they both do. charlotte is also an entitled, rich brat. the fact that she got the apartment out of her marriage annoyed the SHIT out of me.
i also fucking LOATHE when women play that dumb, coy shit where they don’t communicate major issues bc they’re scared of rejection or something. i’m sure it’s no huge surprise about big being in and out of carrie’s life, but so many times she was just acting like a psycho. what would the show be without carrie being carrie, though?
overall, i loved carrie (i loved her more in the carrie diaries, though). i just really couldn’t stand when she was acting like a dramatic love goon.
samantha was my favorite.
after i finally finished the show and movie pt 1, i started finally reading up on some stuff. apparently SJP was given executive producer title after season 2 and it annoyed kim cattrall bc she wanted a pay raise as well. personally, i agree with her. between the four girls, aside from carrie, i think she was putting in way more than kristin davis, and while this is probably not the best way to measure the acting abilities – samantha was much more naked/sexual of a character than miranda. even if kim was okay with it, and clearly she knew what her character was, i feel like she was much bigger of a character than the other two.
what else?
seeing old new york in film/tv is always so cozy and depressing. seeing don’t walk/walk signs vs the stupid hands, the twin towers, the old stores, just the overall vibe… it kills me. i miss it so much. it’s nice to escape to that sometimes.
it was also hard to consider the fun i had in NYC in my 20s and 30s, and now that’s behind me. i mean, it’s not like i don’t go out anymore… but the city is not the same, the people surrounding me are not the same, it’s a lifetime ago. shit is depressing to think about.
i think approaching my 40s doesn’t scare me that much, it’s just the whole realizing i’m a decade away from fucking 50 that scares me. how tf did that happen? EW.
i keep realizing visually that everyone and everything is aging. while this might be super obvious throughout life, it’s definitely kicked in hardcore within the last five years. johnny knoxville was in a magazine last week and he looked like he was fucking 70. it made me so anxious.
but i digress…
i would recommend it if you haven’t watched it. it’s pretty solid. 4/5 stars.
the movie sucked, but you’ll want to watch it just for personal conclusion.
