streamed in 2020
January 11th, 2021 @ 9:37 am
this was my first year of keeping track of my streaming habits. i know you can just go to your history (at least in netflix you can), but i figured i’d showcase my ridiculous binging habits here (with tiny summaries/reviews for inspiration), and showcase anything new i had come across to whomever ends up here on my site.
i figured with covid ruling the world, i’d watch more, since i have all the damn time in the world. turns out i just watch shows more quickly since they’re packed into like 12 hours per day. SO… here’s year #1, hopefully i can keep up this year. it looks like i’ll still be spending every waking minute at home, so wtf else do i have to do?
the mandalorian
late 2019, dec 2020 | sci-fi space action drama A LIL BIT OF EVERYTHING on disney+
unless you live under a rock, i’m sure you know what the mandalorian is about…
tl;dr: the child aka baby yoda (i’ll keep calling him that so i don’t ruin it for you) is a sweet lil alien babe that was hidden away for years for protection purposes when that shitstain palpatine set order 66 into motion. he is 50 years old and before he was hidden away, he had training by jedi masters at the jedi temple on coruscant. a bounty hunter/mandalorian named din djarin (aka mando) gets hired to track down baby yoda and has to turn him over to some “client”. he eventually realizes he doesn’t want the child to be hurt, and the whole show’s premise is keeping him safe and getting him back to other jedi masters.
this show honestly has shaved YEARS off of my life, due to anxiety and emotions i normally don’t utilize, lol. warn you, i will. baby yoda is one of the cutest things in the entire universe, and he pulls at your heart strings every chance he gets.
if you’re into star wars, you’ll love it. it’s not a disappointment.
would the stu rewatch it? FUCK YES.
do you have to pay full attention to it? yes, and you’ll want to.
virgin river
december 2020 | (ROMANTIC) drama on netflix
not sure i’d call this a ROMANTIC drama, but okay… a woman’s husband/baby dies and she starts a new life in this rural ass remote river/forest town in northern cali. where she doesn’t fit in… but then she slowly starts fitting in. she does end up finding a romantic relationship in the show (with a grey’s anatomy guy!), but there are other story lines that aren’t romantic at all.
it’s kind of cornball, but not LIFETIME or hallmark cornball.
you can tell i’m purposefully trying not to rewatch the things i’ve watched 9379387 times this year, and getting very bored, lol.
would the stu rewatch it? yes, i’ll watch new seasons
do you have to pay full attention to it? yes-ish
workin’ moms (series)
nov 2020 | comedy/drama on netflix
this is a show about a group of working moms that starts off in a mom’s support group, and it kind of changes over the seasons. each family has its own issues that come along with their love lives and careers, there’s lots of sex, drinking/drugs, funny/crazy situations and it makes me LOL a lot.
would the stu rewatch it? yes!
do you have to pay full attention to it? eh, not but you prob want to.
never have i ever (season 1)
nov 2020 | comedy/drama (mostly comedy) on netflix
this is a show about an indian teenager dealing with your typical teenage bs. she’s trying to fit in and get popular with her best friends after a shitty year (her dad died, she was temporarily paralyzed) and ends up in funny and embarrassing situations. she’s obsessed with this super popular dude and kind of ends up scoring a chance with him.
this show actually made me LOL a few times, and overall, it was really sweet.
would the stu rewatch it? season 2, coming right up!
do you have to pay full attention to it? not really, but you’ll probably want to.
dash & lily (season 1)
nov 2020 | romcom on netflix
i watched this bc it was netflix recommended and christmas themed. i was trying to get in the holiday mood, and nothing gets me more holiday hyped than NYC during the holiday season.
tl;dr: two teenagers find each other through a book-related scavenger hunt. one is looking for love, the other one just takes the chance at the game. it turns out that the world is smaller than they think and end up at the same place at the same time anyway and blah blah cute love story.
would the stu rewatch it? yeah, it was cute.
do you have to pay full attention to it? eh, not but you prob want to.
american horror story // 1984
may or june 2020 | horror/thriller on hulu
another show i forgot to list watching…
it took me two tries to get into this one. i love AHS, and basically am stuck in the 80s, so i thought this one was going to right up my alley… but i hated the first episode and had to come back to it. once i gave it another shot, i ended up liking it. this wasn’t one of my favorites in the series, but it was rad overall.
tl;dr – you’re in the 80s and this group goes up to a kids camp to become counselors. they end up running into multiple killers and then shit gets all american horror story on you – shit from left field and you’re like wtf? lol.
my favorite thing that i took away from this season was richard ramirez. not only did the kid who played him look just like him, but he was super hot, which leaves me confused… who wants to find serial killers hot? at any rate, he was obsessed with billy idol, which i can agree with wholeheartedly. sometimes i find myself talking about certain musicians from back then like fucking pat bateman, just like he did. billy is def one of them. ?
the soundtrack was good, too.
would the stu rewatch it? sure, probably.
do you have to pay full attention to it? eh, kinda.
revenge
june 2020 | thriller/drama-ish on hulu
i have no idea how i forgot to list this watch, but i squeezed it in during late june.
tl;dr – this show is about a woman that’s got a crazy plan for revenge against this super rich family that framed her father for crimes. it all takes place in the hamptons, where she grew up next to said rich family. lots of bougie, douchey parties and entitled white folks… then lots of weird, sneaky, spy stuff. it’s a good show, it’s my second rewatch already.
would the stu rewatch it? yep, this was my 2nd rewatch!
do you have to pay full attention to it? eh, not but you prob want to.
versailles
nov 2020 | historical drama (french) on netflix
this show is about louis XIV and when he moved the kingdom of france to versailles. it focuses on his life at the palace, his wife, his mistresses, his brother and his boyfriend, pregnancies louis just decided to partake in with no fucks given, war, riches, etc.
if you’re into historical royalty shows like the tudors, reign and the crown and stuff like that, you’ll enjoy this.
would the stu rewatch it? yes!
do you have to pay full attention to it? yeah, kinda.
rita
nov 2020 | comedy/drama on netflix
this is a danish show… so you have to pay attention to subtitles. i feel like it’s very make it or break it for some people. i don’t mind it.
this show is about a teacher who is a single mother, very headstrong/stubborn, doesn’t take no shit. she’s a badass, and the show is just situations she’s in… she was having an affair with one of the characters who ran the school she worked at, opened a new school with another teacher, just typical life shit.
would the stu rewatch it? absolutely! it’s my 2nd time picking it back up with a newer season.
do you have to pay full attention to it? yes – SUBTITLES!
riverdale
oct 2020-nov 2020 | mystery/drama on netflix
if you’ve never heard of riverdale, tl;dr – it’s based on the archie comics, but have taken a dark turn. it’s a teen show, but it’s not overly annoyingly youthful where you can’t hang while watching it as an adult.
PSA: in the middle of season 2/3, shit gets WEIRD and confusing, but it all works out… so if it seems like it’s derailed severely, hang in there.
the singing and dancing is kind of annoying, but overall i enjoy this show. there are a lot of nods to other shows i love, including twin peaks… ?
would the stu rewatch it? yes! this was my 2nd rewatch so far…
do you have to pay full attention to it? yeah, kinda.
feel good
october 2020 | romantic comedy/drama on netflix
this show is about a lesbian couple… one is an ex drug addict and one is your tepid/average in your 30s type british chick. your typical lesbian snags a straight girl and then she struggles with telling her family/friends type of a story.
i summed it up like a goon, but i can asssure you it’s good/funny and i’ll def watch more if they offer up a second season.
would the stu rewatch it? yes
do you have to pay full attention to it? eh, not but you prob want to.
evil
october 2020 | supernatural drama on netflix
DEMONS, POSSESSIONS AND SATAN, OH MY!
this was dark/creepy and weird… a psychologist is brought onto criminal cases to prove against supernatural shit and ends up working with a priest and a tech guy. things get a lil crazy when her family starts getting pulled into the supernatural stuff.
it’s not cheesy, i really liked it. perf for this halloweenie season.
would the stu rewatch it? HECK YES!
do you have to pay full attention to it? yes
ratched
october 2020 | psychological thriller on netflix
i figured out very quickly into watching this show, that it was done by the same folks that brought us american horror story. sarah paulson and finn wittrock tipped me off…
i can’t really explain the show without giving stuff away, so if you’re in the mood for something on the darker side and enjoy the vibe of AHS, you’ll like this show.
would the stu rewatch it? yes
do you have to pay full attention to it? yeah
desperate housewives
sept 2020-oct 2020 | “soap opera mystery comedy-drama” via wikipedia on hulu
the first time i watched this show years ago, i thought it was one of those like, older women shows (i don’t know what that means, lol) – i guess i thought it was going to be like a rom com with some serious stuff going on… well, i was very wrong.
overall, desperate housewives gives me a lot of anxiety and leaves me angry at most of the women characters… i hate when women act off of their emotions and don’t use their brains (i am a virgo, sorry). it reminded me of watching “cheers”… diane and rebecca drove me NUTS.
aside from the mostly irritating women, the stories are mostly dark and entertaining, there are a lot of funny parts and there are so many good actors from other shows that i love (twin peaks, frasier, lookin right at you). even though most of the main characters are irritating, they still grow on you.
you can kind of drift out of it and let it be background noise, so it’s easy to watch/listen to while working or falling asleep (when i mostly stream/binge shows).
would the stu rewatch it? sure, probably.
do you have to pay full attention to it? eh, i’d say you could miss about 30% of an episode and still stay on track with the stories.
how i met your mother
july-sept 2020 | comedy (some seriousness/drama) on hulu
unless you’ve been living under a rock, i’m sure you’ve heard of this show.
first off, yeah, i realize it’s a SITCOM (ewwwww!)… but i wouldn’t recommend it if i didn’t think people would love it. somehow this show always gets compared to FRIENDS (gag), i guess… new york, apartments, must be exactly the same! chill with dat shit, friends is not funny, no matter how much y’all may like the story line. i watched the whole thing straight through one year and only laughed like, 4 times.
anyways, tl;dr – ted (narrator, main character and hopeless romantic) and his friends live in NYC and he is looking for a wife to settle down with and have kids. the basis of the show is him telling his kids about how he met their mother and the mishaps and history he has with a few of his closest friends. a lot of stuff happens along the way, don’t want to give anything away, but there are a lot of personal jokes in this show, so you king of have to watch it in order.
i will forewarn you, the first season is a tad awk/new show-y and the 8th season is awful overall (slow, not as funny)… but it’s such a good show i don’t even mind dealing with the bad parts of it.
i loved the ending, a lot of people didn’t… bah humbug, you bums.
one of the reasons i love this show so much is because it legit makes me lol on the verge of tears quite often. it’s a rarity that shows make me laugh like that.
would the stu rewatch it? F&#K YES i will. this was my 3rd or 4th time!
do you have to pay full attention to it? to enjoy it thoroughly, i say yes… but it’s also a good background comedy show.
unsolved mysteries (2020, netflix version)
july 2020 | mystery (paranormal, death, etc.) on netflix
OH HELL YES.
so during pandemic, one of my routine constants was getting over my fear of watching the old unsolved mysteries. i couldn’t even LISTEN to the theme song for nearly three decades, it scared the crap out of me. the show is not scary, robert stack was creepy AF and so was the theme song, but that’s about it.
i didn’t hate all of the stories, some were absolutely silly and some were just unbelievable. some were creepy, and juicy. i lived for those. the new unsolved mysteries catered to that.
the only problem is that the new ones netflix just released have no updates at the end, lol. the old episodes mostly have updates because they’re from so long ago. i guess that was the one silver lining to not watching it for over twenty years.
anyway, the new one has a new format. instead of having multiple stories in one episode, it’s one story per and it’s formatted like a documentary. think: making a murderer. i didn’t hate the format, but i definitely wanted more out of it. do people no longer have mysteries? 🙁
the theme song hath redeemed itself, and there is a nod to robert at the end of it that makes my eyes well up<3 RIP ROBERT STACK!
anyways, i can’t wait for the next season.
would the stu rewatch it? HECK YES!
do you have to pay full attention to it? yes.
my name is earl
july 2020 | comedy on hulu
first off, “my name is earl” is done by the same people as “raising hope”, so you’ll see the same cast members here and there and the overall vibe is kind of the same aka the show is also hysterical. i will preface with the ending is a cliffhanger, but well worth the watch anyway.
earl and his brother are bad seeds. as adults, earl wins money on a scratch-off lotto ticket and realizes after he gets hit by a car and loses the ticket but soon gets it back, has an epiphany that he’s gotta get on karma’s good side. so the entire show is based on a list of bad things he’s done and making them right.
there are story lines in between, too.
would the stu rewatch it? HECK YES!
do you have to pay full attention to it? no, but you’ll want to.
raising hope
june-july 2020 | comedy on hulu
omg i haven’t watched this show in YEARS bc netflix snatched it away from me… well, i’m STILL on this fuckin’ hulu account (i blew through the trial and can’t wait to get off of it, but i keep finding shows that are no longer on netflix).
honestly, there aren’t a ton of shows that make me LOL, but “raising hope” is one of them.
tl;dr: boy meets girl, girl is serial killer, she gets preggo and boy is stuck with the baby and his family/friends. his family is on the poorer side and unconventional – but definitely loving and super funny.
would the stu rewatch it? HECK YES!
do you have to pay full attention to it? no, but you’ll want to.
13 reasons why (season 4)
june 2020 | drama on netflix
i feel like this season really veered off-track from where it started. in the middle of season 4, it started getting really weird. if you’ve not watched it yet, i do suggest watching the first two. they were really good… especially 1. i think season 1 is when hannah commits suicide? it’s been a while. i watched it before they cut the scene (i think it’s still gone). while it was clearly disturbing, it really made the show. it was pretty intense.
would the stu rewatch it? yes, probably the earlier seasons with hannah in them.
do you have to pay full attention to it? yes.
beverly hills, 90210
may-june 2020 | drama on hulu
i only remembered bits and pieces of this show, and after i finished watching ally mcbeal, i was going to cancel hulu… but i said fuck it let me just see if that’s on here… and there it was – good ol BH90210. i figured since i haven’t watched it since it was on the air, i’d give it a whirl as an adult.
well, as an adult, i’d like to point out that this show is horrible. it takes a full season to even begin to get good – and there were 22 episodes in the first season (then in the second season there were 28, third was 30, fourth and fifth both had 32 and so on…). re-watching this series was PAINFUL. the only plus to the first season was that they mentioned twin peaks or david lynch on a regular basis. i had such hope… le sigh.
listen, i love drowning myself in anything 80s or 90s for nostalgia reasons – but this aint it. i’m sure the show couldn’t (or just didn’t) pay for the rights to use actual 90s music, so it was full of corny weather channel sounding filler tunes. you can see the microphone above the actors like 70% of the time, the fashion was not that great, and the girls were just kind of bland. i also hate LA for the most part, and the vibe is…….. very LA, lol.
the stories pick up a bit, mainly the ones with tension were good, but the treatment of certain characters was so annoying. my first *thing* was that i was no longer just straight up #TEAMBRENDA. don’t get me wrong, i LOATHE kelly, and in the whole triangle with dylan – if i had to pick a side, it would def be brenda’s… but brenda also was a complete bitchy moron. i won’t give the show away if YOU want to watch it, but i’m officially team of neither of them. i hate the way the show treated steve and andrea. neither of them can get a fucking break… like let the brandon thing happen, let steve get the girl. wtf man? and don’t even get me started on the monster donna turns into after being a total dope for too long.
moving along to what seems like the 53rd season, in comes valerie malone and just annoys the shit out of me… which is hard for me to digest because it’s THE tiffani amber thiessen, whose OTHER/BETTER character we all loved and adored (until she dumped zack – i will never forgive her for that).
anyways, i can’t say there was a part of this series where i was like “i finally like this show”. i feel like how i felt when i watched party of five as an adult… a complete waste of my time.
lastly, i would like to note that the modern day 90210 was NOT bad, and would totes rewatch that version.
P.S. fuck you, kelly taylor!
update: i was like 8 episodes away from the series finale when i posted this… PSA: hulu doesn’t have the last episode! what a waste of my time, lol.
would the stu rewatch it? not unless you paid me.
do you have to pay full attention to it? i’d say about 70% of the time, yes.
dream on (HBO show)
april 2020 | adult-themed comedy on DVD
martin tupper is a divorced new yorker and father of one. he’s a publisher at a miserable publishing house in downtown manhattan, and the poor guy constantly gets one-upped by his ex wife’s new husband. on a brighter note, he’s constantly getting laid, and this show was a visual journal of just that.
this is a 90s show, so it’s way oudated, but it is like a great big hug from old NYC (lots of shots from old NYC) and childhood. yes, for some odd reason when i hit double digits, i thought this was appropriate for me, and nobody stopped me? lol.
while outdated, this show is still hysterical… i only have seasons 1 and 2 on dvd, though. HBO never released the rest. i have to check to see if that new streaming service has it.
would the stu rewatch it? most def!
do you have to pay full attention to it? they’re short episodes, you definitely want to!
ally mcbeal
april-may 2020 | comedy/drama on hulu
most of you may remember ally mcbeal from the 90s with the stupid dancing CGI baby… it’s actually a really funny show other than that. there are a lot of serious parts to it also, but it’s mainly good for laughs.
tl;dr: ally quits her law firm where she was being sexually harassed, and runs into a friend from college who hires her for HIS firm in the same day. she gets there and finds her longtime, childhood boyfriend. she lives with her best friend who is also the DA of boston. most characters are lawyers and judges. while ally is the main character, the main cast is really good too.
some of the show is cringey and it’s from the 90s, so it’s a little outdated… but i always find comfort in the show.
would the stu rewatch it? heck yes! this was my 5th rewatch.
do you have to pay full attention to it? yes and no, it depends on the scene but most of it is easy to catch up on.
have a good trip: adventures in psychedelics
may 2020 | documentary on netflix
this doc is about celebs (comedians, actors, musicians, etc.) tripping on psychedelics – mainly acid/shrooms. talking about experiences they’ve had – it’s HYSTERICAL… and highly informative if you’ve never tripped before.
would the stu rewatch it? maybe not, i had my fill… but i did love it.
do you have to pay full attention to it? YES.
new girl
april 2020 | comedy on netflix
it took me a few episodes to really get into this show. zooey deschanel’s character is so fucking annoying. even during the entire series, she just annoyed the shit out of me… but when she was on maternity leave, i also hated the show without her. go figure.
this show is about a girl that moves in with three guys, and of course there’s sexual tension between her and one of the other roommates. there are other characters that come and go, but her bff is one of the main ones, as well. she is smart but acts like a vapid dope a lot of the time, but the guys are hysterical. schmidt and winston are my favorite and actually really make me laugh out loud.
i thought at first that this show was going to be some bullshit sitcom crap like friends, but while it was light, it was actually funny. the story lines were good too.
if you need something on in the background and want some laughs, i do recommend.
would the stu rewatch it? yeah, probably.
do you have to pay full attention to it? EH, i would say you can drift off a BIT.
easy
april 2020 | comedy/drama on netflix
this is one of those shows with different and separate story lines, yet they cross over. ie: one of the “stories” is a married couple that isn’t fucking anymore, and one of the other stories is this selfish, entitled baby of a lesbian that babysits for the married couple, but you see the separate story lines as if they were their own episode/show. at first, it was very confusing because i hadn’t heard or read anything about the show… but then it clicked and all was well.
there is a lot of relationship/sex and general life stuff in this show.
i didn’t love it, but i also didn’t hate it…
would the stu rewatch it? yeah, probably.
do you have to pay full attention to it? yes.
spring breakers
april 2020 | it’s labeled as a crime drama online? on netflix
none of my shows had new episodes, so i scoured through netflix movies and saw this. i didn’t even realize it was written by the guy that wrote “kids”, but it makes sense now that i watched it.
from the perspective of the cast, i honestly thought i was getting into a comedy, not this dark bullshit. while the girls were very hot at this point in their lives, that is the only thing this movie had going for it. it really was a lot of annoying young girls during spring break acting like, well, those girls.
there is some dark/crime shit tied into it, but if you want to see jiggling, drinking, drugs, half naked people and hooking up, it’s the perf movie for ya! the dialogue was awful, and it wasn’t even as shocking as “kids”, if you wanted to do a comparison.
i’m sorry i wasted my time on this.
would the stu rewatch it? hellllllllllll naw.
do you have to pay full attention to it? not really.
the edge of seventeen
april 2020 | coming of age comedy/drama on netflix
this is your standard coming of age teen movie. her dad died when she was younger, and she’s an angsty girl. her mother actually triggered me, because it reminded me of my mother, and how she handled situations. her best friend ends up dating her older brother, and she feels betrayed. her mother, instead of being understanding about it, just treats her like it shouldn’t matter.
she ends up confiding in a teacher she becomes close with, and there are a couple of love situations tied into the story.
while i didn’t HATE this movie, it didn’t remind me of a lot of teen flicks i grew up with. i just wasn’t that impressed.
would the stu rewatch it? probably not.
do you have to pay full attention to it? yes.
on my block (season 3)
april 2020 | teen comedy/drama on netflix
this is about a bunch of kids in LA that live in a dangerous, inner city neighborhood. they grew up together and now they’re teenagers hooking up and hanging out, dealing with day-to-day teen shit and gang-related stuff too, since the brother of one of the main characters is in a gang. it’s 50/50% on the serious to comedy balance.
would the stu rewatch it? yep! love this show.
do you have to pay full attention to it? yes, for the most part. i rarely drift off, though.
elite (season 3)
april 2020 | teen drama on netflix
elite is about a bunch of spoiled, rich teens based in spain. the show is based around their entitled bullshit and getting away with murder… literally. season 3 didn’t disappoint. it’s like gossip girl in europe, just darker.
would the stu rewatch it? yep!
do you have to pay full attention to it? yes
grey’s anatomy
feb-march 2020 | drama on netflix
i have some thoughts about grey’s you can read here. if you’ve never watched it, i recommend it. it’s got a predictable recipe, which some find annoying, but the first couple of times i watched it, i didn’t fully notice it (especially in a negative way). it’s obviously got its main character – but there are plenty of main characters, couples to love, couples to hate, characters to loathe and crazy stories.
i am not an emotional person, but i will say – this show knows how to get my tear ducts going.
would the stu rewatch it? most likely!
do you have to pay full attention to it? the characters have their story lines, so i’d say yes BUT there are plenty of trauma/surgery scenes you can drift off in.
the crown
march 2020 | historical drama on netflix
this is about the life of elizabeth the II and the royal family. i happen to find anything british completely enthralling, but i do have a weird curiosity and interest about the royal family. it was an historically accurate show, i enjoyed it. 🙂
would the stu rewatch it? yes, probably.
do you have to pay full attention to it? YES.
the irishman
feb 2020 | crime film on netflix
being a fan of goodfellas, casino, etc. – while in the same vein, it was DEFINITELY not like the others. it was VERY long and drawn out, and i only got halfway through. while watching the other movies, i feel like you were so entertained you weren’t watching the clock – but this one, you feel every minute. it is still being debated in my home whether it’s going to be finished or not. a lot of people we’ve spoken to say not to even bother.
while i compared this movie to goodfellas and casino, it definitely lacked key, featured scenes like in those movies. sure there was an explosion here or a death there, but they weren’t as impactful or memorable. it just didn’t compare, for me.
it’s a scorsese movie, don’t get me wrong – and it was directed and written well. it just had it’s reason, and it wasn’t as impactful as the other big name movies. maybe that was the point – it was an “in closing” type of movie. while i respect that, i wasn’t super impressed.
i didn’t HATE it, it was just… well, like a bowl of unsweetened oatmeal.
would the stu rewatch it? no.
do you have to pay full attention to it? yeah.
skins (UK) – series
jan 2020 | teen comedy/drama on netflix
this is a guilty pleasure show – i just get like getting lost in the mostly dark atmosphere of this show. all of the kids are out of control, but they’re all amusing, relating and believable. i was and hung out with kids that were doing dumb/bad shit, so it hits home in a way? they all kind of have parents that don’t fully care – i can relate (not that my mom was a terrible mother, she just didn’t care on all levels, some V important ones).
i like how they normalize a lot of situations that society seems to STILL have issues with (LGBTQ stuff). i can’t believe how many drugs were done, or what they were doing, but i don’t know wtf is realistically going on in other countries/cities. my friends knew their limits here in NYC, so that i can’t relate to.
once they got a little older, things got a little darker, but it’s always entertaining.
would the stu rewatch it? of course! i usually watch it once every year or two years.
do you have to pay full attention to it? EH, i would say you can drift off and come back to it and not miss too much of a beat.
sex education (season 2)
jan 2020 | comedy/drama on netflix
i find “sex education” overall hysterical. while it’s pretty funny, it also touches on serious stuff. sex and sexuality (obviously), there are many character stories that involve normalizing homosexuality (which i fully appreciate), many issues we deal with body-wise and emotionally, relationships, etc.
gillian anderson (jean) is a sex therapist/educator and mother to otis, a teenager who charges his peers for sex advice. he’s got relationship and sex issues bc of his father’s indiscretions, that he witnessed as a child. he’s always got himself in a dumb predicament. the other characters are mainly teenagers, all dealing with well, teenage bullshit. bullying, relationships, parents being dicks, drugs, drinking, sex, etc.
would the stu rewatch it? yep! love this show.
do you have to pay full attention to it? yes, for the most part. i rarely drift off, though.
what did jack do?
jan 2020 | a short film by david lynch on netflix
if you don’t enjoy david lynch’s brain, you will hate this.
“what did jack do?” is a black and white, 17 min short film about a detective talking to a monkey about murder. none of it makes sense, and the setting is dark and unsettling. i found myself getting antsy about 3/4 mins in, but i sat through most of it.
a lot of reviews i read were people trying to interpret it meaning something tied to twin peaks continuing. i wouldn’t try to interpret this movie with a 10 foot pole… but i’ll still keep my eyes peeled for anything tied to twin peaks continuing.
would the stu rewatch it? probably not.
do you have to pay full attention to it? YES.
grace and frankie (season 6)
jan 2020 | comedy on netflix
if you haven’t heard of it or seen it, tl;dr: “grace and frankie” is about two older women rivals that were married to successful attorneys, that end up coming out of the closet together as a couple, in their 60s/70s and leaving both wives for each other. soon after, the two women live together in a shared beach house, strike up a friendship and start a business together, all while learning to get along. there are other family members/side stories as well.
this is a very funny show and everyone has great chemistry on it.
would the stu rewatch it? heck yes! i’m on season 6 already…
do you have to pay full attention to it? i don’t often find myself drifting off… it keeps my attention.
spinning out (season 1)
jan 2020 | drama revolving around ice skating/family issues on netflix
“spinning out” was one of those recommendation via netflix shows i got suckered into. i’m guessing it was offered to me bc i’ve watched the UK skins on netflix (the actress that portrays effy on skins, is the main character in spinning out).
this show is mainly about a family (the bakers) that consist of two teenage sisters and a mother. the sisters are figure skaters and have a lot of pressure put on them by their mother, bc their mother was a skater when she was a teenager also. she got pregnant with the main character (kat), and stopped soon afterwards and wanted to live vicariously through them where she left off.
there are a bunch of different characters aside from the main family of 3, and each have their own stories. they’re mainly revolving around mental disorders and relationships. the baker girls also not well off and are surrounded by rich people bc they live and work in a ski resort town, so they touch on class issues and also race issues.
would the stu rewatch it? yep! i actually really like this show.
do you have to pay full attention to it? EH, i would say you can drift off and come back to it and not miss too much of a beat.
good girls (season 2)
jan 2020 | crime/comedy on netflix
if you haven’t already watched “good girls“, i recommend it. it’s dark but funny, and mainly about three suburban moms doing ridiculously criminal shit for family funds. sometimes it’s anxiety-driving bc these women actually do some DUMB/unrealistic shit… but still entertaining enough to come back for a new season.
would the stu rewatch it? yep!
do you have to pay full attention to it? yes and no, it depends on the scene but most of it is easy to catch up on.
you (season 2)
jan 2020 | dark/thriller on netflix
if you’re not already caught up on the show “YOU“, tl;dr: it’s like dan from gossip girl grew up and became a creepier creep. he obsesses over a woman he meets in a book store he works at. i can’t really dive into any more without giving things away.
i wasn’t a huge fan of season 2, but definitely recommend watching season 1 if you haven’t already.
would the stu rewatch it? EH. i’ll def watch season 3, but probably would skip season 2 on a rewatch sesh.
do you have to pay full attention to it? yes.
