last year was a cespool, this year was way better

if you knew me IRL last year, either i was a completely miserable schlep or didn’t seem it at the time, because you were a distracting, shining beam of love. not having a job for most of last year was AWFUL… it was so depressing. i didn’t just lose a job, i lost my routine/sanity and friends, but i digress. i am here to talk about this year…
i actually FINALLY had a decent year, woo!
the good:
i saw my lifelong bff a whopping THREE times! (apparently, having kids take up a lot of time)
i got a new job! alongside taking on this job, i met my cubemate sarai, who i instantly hit it off with. on my first day, i met beto o’rourke at the starbucks in the lobby of my office building.
i found a frasier podcast AND WENT TO SEE IT RECORDED LIVE! the gal who runs it is super awesome and funny and i’m glad i stumbled upon it. i haven’t done podcasts in years, but when i started taking the express bus, i had a lot of free time on my commute.
i got two (or three?) twin peaks tattoos! two sessions, one was laura palmer hands, two were planets that are the keys to opening the black lodge.
i traveled! i got back to california at least once this year (i saw the poppies, i went to an IG horror pop-up with my sister, i got to go to the disney offices where my sister worked – i saw the old animation buildings!, most importantly, i got to hang out with my sister and bee ♥), i went back to seattle with ricardo for halloween, we went to portland, steven and i went to north carolina for sarai’s wedding and finally, i’m closing the year off in florida with sarai. we’re going to a lightning/red wings game tonight.
philanthropy! i did charitable things with work 3 times this year 🙂 i got to make greeting cards for sick kiddos in the hospital, i packed backpacks for less fortunate kiddos with my wonderful new friend/co-worker chrissy and hooked up a kiddo in the bronx for xmas with “operation santa” with my dept. at work.
BOOKS: i read a lot of good books this year – and i probably read the highest amount of books in a while. i mean, i do work at a publishing company with take shelves, lol. most fondly, i found the felix castor novels by mike carey. it’s about an exorcist and his demonic adventures. i love getting lost in those books, and i really miss reading them (there are only 5 in the series).
i also read some really good memoirs, most favorably, the one lol tolhurst did for the cure and the one about dee dee ramone (rip ♥)
i reinstated my plaid vans! i had red/black plaid vans for YEARS. they were my staple shoes… until my bff’s mom (rip ♥) threw them out. vans also stopped producing them… sads. i always checked the custom vans maker to see if they’d added the tartan print, AND THIS WAS MY YEAR. got emmmmmmm.
shows: i didn’t go to any, really. everyone keeps fucking playing festivals. fuck music fests. i did get to see face to face at knitting factory and alexisonfire reunited again, though.
: droOoOoOools at george pettit’s hot, shirtless dad bod :
i saw an INXS concert in the movies… sort of a concert?
pip went on so many adventures this year! he went to florida, washington, oregon, north carolina, the beach a bunch of times. if you don’t know who pip is, then you’re probably not cleared to see my instagram or to obtain this information, sorry.
summer fridays with ricardo. i still hang out with ricardo on a pretty regular basis, we tried especially to hang on summer fridays this year. if we can’t have our daily routine at work, we can still try for after work.
my adventures with richie are always my favorite bc we go drink in public in places i don’t normally travel to. upper midtown and uptown, usually. we do travel down to the vill/LES sometimes, but i like to go to places i rarely see on those days – i finally got to see the queen andrea tunnel up in inwood, for example. fond mems!
i went to the beach lots with kristen this year. last year, i just… didn’t? i dunno why. i gots me a lovely tan this year, even after getting a tattoo touch-up in the middle of july, lol.
UNRULEDclub: i got to sell at the queens museum this year! definitely a cool experience, and i moved a lot of inventory there. i felt so… queens 😛
i dyed my hair black and i was comfortable for a bit! …3 months in, i regretted this decision, but at least i owned it for 3 months, lol.
WENDY’S SPICY NUGS CAME BACK! need i say more?
I MET TWO OF MY LONG DISTANCE IG FRIENDS IRL THIS YEAR – BOBBI (from milwaukee) AND MAYE (from portland)
i got an apple watch for my bday from steven 🙂
sports: i only went to ONE mets game and ONE ranger game, lol. george parros was at the ranger game, though.
TRUMP GOT IMPEACHED. who knows if he’ll be removed, but at least his sorry, criminal, loophole dwelling ass has been forever tainted in the history books.
lastly, yet most importantly, i am starting to get my finances back on the mend. it’s terrible how a lack of routine money can make or break a human’s sanity.
bad:
my outdoor cat shapoo seemingly passed away 🙁
we lost ric ocasek </3
i turned 38 – ew.
my mother: tl;dr is the second most stressful thing in my life and i keep her at arms distance. i don’t really get into personal specifics on this website, but this year was really bad between us. the most aggravating part of this year with her, is realizing she is a person that needs to turn things around in her life and she refuses to. she also now lives 80 miles away from me, and she shouldn’t. she just gave up on a functional life here in the 5 boroughs and left me bc it was the easier thing to do.
i’ve always known my mother had her own personal issues – we all do. i think at age 38, i realized how imperfect she really is and it frustrates me that she handles things so terribly.
i don’t think i know everything, but i feel like as a functioning adult, that my mother is making terrible decisions and i want her to turn things around before it’s too late. she’s not getting any younger.
* * *
anyways, overall, clearly the good outweighed the bad… i hope next year is even better and that there’s a landmark thing happening. i am sick of mediocre shit, and i really need to get things going before i blink and i’m 50.
EW.
