today is record store day! i mean, there aren’t very many places to really buy records anymore around here… barnes & noble had records, but there are none in queens anymore. there’s one comic booky store in roosevelt field that has them, but who knows if steve wants to get up and go out there today. ANYWAYS, i got to thinking this morning. i have that ridiculous crosley everyone and their mama has, and it B L O W S. it sounds awful, and i need a better record player. i know i could just buy a technics and some speakers and call it a day, butttttttttt then i come across this gem:
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand i’m dying, bc of course i can’t find it online *ANYWHERE*. it’s a vintage sears stereo from the 80’s and it was like, made for me. #DYINGGGGGG
i mean, i was totally too young to even ask for that back in the day. i was probably 4 when that was in high demand. the stereos that my generation absolutely *had to have* to be considered a cool kid were those 3-5 disc changer jammies (shown below). for christmas when i turned 14 or 15, i finally got one:
on the right: that is actually my stereo that i (VERY HESITANTLY) threw out in 2015 when i moved out of glendale. the caption for that picture on IG was:
“🙌🙏💟📻🔊🎶🎵🎶 thank you for all the work you put in, my sweet lil #aiwa stereo. you got me through my teen years, adult years, sometimes served as an alarm clock, 6 moves, countless breakup music sessions (and happy times too) and duh, netflix audio for all of the TV series binges. RIP.”
back in the 90s, they were theeeeeeeeeeeee shit. it was one of those coming of age milestones that we lived for back then. you couldn’t wait for certain things coming up as a youth in the 80s and 90s. stereos, your own phone line, your own tv, your own AOL account, your own computer, a beeper, girls wanting a nameplate necklace, getting a perm, etc. – i kind of touched on this stuff here, too.
WTF do they pine for like this stuff aforementioned? their own smart phone or ipad? xbox? a macbook? ………………i can’t think of anything else. how odd is that? it kind of bummed me out. i really have to have a chat with my 16 year old cousin, mia, lol.
