firstly, i just want to state very clearly that i have loved kevin smith, and his movies for years. i think he’s hilarious and brilliant and i love the way that he references and pays homage to things that he loves. i fall into such a 90’s feel when watching those movies, and i love and miss them times so much… so i love to throw them on often.
at any rate, i went on an anti-brodeur tirade on google today. i went scouring for an “uncle daddy” shirt. if you have no idea what i’m referring to, read this (one of many articles covering the story).
in addition to not finding an “uncle daddy” shirt, i did however find a lot of good videos and NYR articles praising players that are no longer on our team, as well. however, going through articles i somehow stumbled upon this article, and it left me feeling very unsettled about the entire premise of the article.
it can be divided into so many different “arguments/points”, so i’ve gotta start this off with a “read more” link because not only did it spark reasoning/an explanation of the NYR vs. NJD rivalry (even between the fans, we don’t just “HATE” you guys for no reason, kevin), but it close-to-home sparks a NYM vs. NYY debate, as well from one of his interview quotes.
i’ll intertwine both.
i’m a new york mets fan (born and raised), so i know what it’s like to “deal with” arrogant fans that make fun of or hate your team (for no good reason(?)). it’s annoying that every time i (mainly) have to deal with one of those stereotypical moronic yankee fans, i end up being accused of being “defensive”. instead of dealing with an interesting, debatable and/or factual conversation about how the team does not always lose or suck, they’ll ignore everything you say. they’ll smile and nod and pretend to listen and just end up saying the mets suck.
they’re pricks… maybe not all of them, but most of them… arrogant pricks (read this, it sums it all up for me – so many good points).
if the mets won 6 world series championships in a row, i would NEVER berate another team just because they’re not winning. actually, i can’t sit here saying i would never berate the yankee’s, i would in a heartbeat if they for once didn’t have that amazingly generous payroll *cough*, but i would never just have a negative opinion without reason.
kevin smith: (on the interviewer being a devils fan vs a jersey native, rangers fan) “Thank God, because every once in a while you meet those cats. All the South Jersey cats still maintain their loyalty to the Flyers, because they’re like ‘Hey man, the Flyers have been around before Devils and I liked hockey before the Devils showed up.’ And all the North Jersey people are like, ‘I’ve been rootin’ for the Rangers for years anyway.'”
i hate a love/hate relationship with that statement.
on the one hand, being from queens, i hate when people that have MASSIVE queens pride …and don’t root for the mets (just because the yankee’s were there before the mets showed up). i can understand if you were born in queens before the 60’s, why you would be a yankee’s fan. i mean, the dodgers left in ’57, so does one then become an LA fan (i wonder if you could even listen to out of state ball games then?!)? the mets weren’t around until ’62… i don’t have many queens-native friends born/raised in that time bracket… so wtf?
i have a friend that once told me his father is a yankee fan, so he is also… as a sports fan in general, i guess i can understand the loyalty that one has to a team they were raised with. i was raised a mets fan, so that’s where my loyalty lies. however, i can’t imagine rooting for a team that pays to keep their success going, or fans that walk around like their shit doesn’t stink that make fun of everyone else because they win all of the time…
having a successful team that wins all of the time, and rubbing it in other peoples faces isn’t the point of loving a team or being a “true fan”. i’m a huge new york rangers fan and we have a ton of wins (and losses), and for the last 5 years, the rangers have had an amazing team – even when we’re down, which has been hitting close to home in this recent half-season. i don’t just say teams are shitty because we’re doing well and finished 1st last season, i say teams are shitty when they are. i also like to mix up my dislike with shitty team franchises, which i’ve had to deal with going to games and what not (for example, i may make fun of the islanders, but that’s because they’ve only got three decent players and their fans are sloppy and horrible to us ranger fans. also: please refer to this post).
i think that there are rivalries between teams, and sometimes that’s that. the rivalry that the mets and the yankees have is a NYC thing, bottom line. sure you have the random moron talking about “they’re in different leagues, don’t compare them”, but ask that idiot what the differences are between the leagues and i’m sure you’d shut them up pretty quickly. if we can end up playing you in the world series, you’re competition. as far as the rangers/devils rivalry, just look up why… we’re neighbors and we’ve met each other many times in the playoffs. it’s as simple as that.
i love sean avery, he’s one of my favorite rangers. devils fans (as well as most nhl fans) hate sean avery, and that definitely has stirred things up over the years also as far as NYR/NJD fans go.
another statement that kind of irritated me was:
kevin smith: What is your general impression of Rangers fans?
“I don’t think people like being Rangers fans as much as they like hating on the Devils.”
honestly, there aren’t many devils that i hate. i am REALLY REALLY REALLY not a fan of the franchise or their shit fans (…again, read this), your goalie or kovi, otherwise, i could care less. the all-time game numbers speak for themselves as the years go by. if you can’t see why from just that alone, are you even paying attention to the rangers vs. devils series? or are you just watching the crowd get into fights over nothing?
i LOVE being a NYR fan. i watch hockey videos and get goosebumps, and tears well up in my eyes instantly. i can name like 5 videos off the top of my head that make me feel like that. i have plenty of friends that are the same exact way, so with all due respect, kevin smith can seckkkk itttttt. i don’t know ANY ranger fans that fit his statement, just as i’m sure there are absolutely no fans that don’t feel the way he does about his devils.
in closing, every devils fan that i’ve come across acts exactly like my fellow new yorkers do when it comes time to their precious history filled yankee’s. i have yet to meet a decent one, one that isn’t arrogant OR throwing some sort of negative vibe for no reason when talking sports.
